Vertex Effect Systems - Travel/Loaner Pedalboard

Post by Desperado »

Here's a pedalboard that I put together over the last few days for gigging clients/pros who need a loaner pedalboard (with a myriad of flavors), while I'm working on their board.

The goal was to have the board be fairly small and compact (small-medium size), and be able to cover a lot of ground with pedal tones, but also be able to accommodate clients that may use more than one amplifier to achieve their sound.

To do this, I used pedals that I had lying around the house with exception to the Demeter Tremulator (which I picked up for $100 on Craigslist) and the Tube Screamer (which I also got on Craigslist for $45), and a older Kriz Kraft board that I've had since the late 1990's. I also built a custom interface with an A/B switch to control the amps and modded many pedals to achieve the best tone.

As for the pedal mods, first, I modded the Boss DS-1 to something along the lines of the Analogman DS-1/Pro Mod, replacing the chip with a JRC op-amp and I added an internal mid-range control to give it a less buzzy and more Marshall-esque quality. The pedal now has much more presence and thickness to the tone. Then, I modded the Tube Screamer to basic 808 specs. and added a JRC4558D. Next, I added in one of my Vertex Modded Wahs (called the Axis Wah), a hot-rodded Crybaby with all Tropical Fish Caps, Vintage Fasel, etc. It is very Hendrix. Lastly, I added Carling DPDT switches to both the MXR Phase 90 and the Dyna Comp for true bypass. Both are from 1979 and have the original Script circuits, so I wanted to keep them as close to original as possible by using Carling switches (like the originals used). I omitted LED's as well to maintain the vintage vibe. I also added 9v taps to both MXR pedals.

The board is outfitted with a custom interface to network the pedalboard with the amp(s). There is a single buffer the runs right after the input to the interface and drives the signal through every pedal in the chain. The buffer did a fantastic job of carrying this signal with literally zero tonal degradation or loss in signal level. There is also an extra patch in the interface so that a client can split out from the board and run into other pedals if desired. There is also a A/B switch built into the interface so that clients may switch between two amps if desired. A Jensen isolation transformer is used to isolate Amp Output "A" from "B".

Overall, the pedalboard (at the very least) met the goals of maintaining a number of tonal choices, while being fairly compact and portable. Additionally, the pedal mods turned out nicely and really added to variety and overall tonal character of the board. Also, the interface allowed for many options as far as amp switching and the ability to patch in other pedals or another pedalboard if the client wanted.

The order of the effects are:

Interface In (from guitar + buffer)--> V.E.S. Axis Wah--> MXR Phase 90--> MXR Dyna Comp--> Ibanez TS-9--> Boss DS-1--> Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus--> Volume Pedal (with Boss TU12 in tuner out)--> T-Rex Replica--> Demeter Tremulator--> Interface Out (to amp)
