4X4 - more EMF causing noise

Post by spitfire808 »

I recently got a 4X4 power supply and installed it under my pedaltrain board. I noticed that my wah pedal is much noisier now when engaged. When I move the wah physically away from the 4X4, the humming sounds drops noticeably. But when on my board, the noise is really loud. From my understanding, it's the EMF of the power supply causing interference with the wah inductor.

Before, I was using a PP2+ and didn't have this problem. Does the 4X4 have a much bigger EMF compared to the PP2+?

Any way to mitigate this problem?

Try some more trouble shooting: try changing cables, try varying the orientation of the two pedals, try changing the wah's position in your chain. Another to try, is to take a flat piece of metal (maybe a couple layers of tin foil), and put it between the wah and the 4x4 when they're close together. It could be an issue of shielding, depending on how your pedal board is set up.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I tried different cables and can't really move things around much on my pedal board. Unless I take the wah off the board completely, there is always some hum (looks like it needs about 6 inches of room away from the 4x4).

I used some metal shielding around the wah inductor but to no avail. By the way, I believe tin foil doesn't block out EMF. To reiterate, I didn't have this problem with the PP2+.

Any other ideas?

Cheers.

Is the wah powered by the 4x4? What if you don't power it with the 4x4 or visa versa? Or have you completely limited it down to a proximity issue?
