PX8 pedal switcher set up advice

Post by Scottplaysguitar »

FIRST I am SORRY for the long post!
I Recently purchased the PX8 switcher and am looking for advice on setting up my board.

I have what I feel are unique pedal board set up needs. I also have a few pedals to assist me in using my Electric guitar and my acoustic guitar, sharing all pedals on my board with both guitars and being able to seamlessly switch between guitars without unplugging and plugging back in. But now I have the PX8, am adding some new pedals and a little confused as to integrating the PX8 for a new set up.

My current board (without PX8) is set up as:
Both Acoustic and Electric guitars in to:
1) Carl Martin Route Box (essentially a double A/B box with INST 1 & INST 2 inputs) & output to:
2) Polytune to:
3) Xotic Wah to:
4) Xotic SP compressor to:
5) MXR bad ass modified Over drive to:
6) MXR bad ass 78 distortion to:
7) tc electronics gravy chorus to:
8) 3 leaf audio proton envelope filter to:
9) Boss DD7 delay to:
10) Strymon Flint (reverb/tremolo) to:
11) Xotic EP booster to:
12) tc electronics Ditto X2 looper to:
1) routed back to the Carl Martin Route Box (input jack)
1a) Carl Martin AMP 1 out to: LR Baggs Para acoustic D.I for my acoustic guitar - goes to PA system.
1b) Carl Martin AMP 2 out to: My electric guitar amp.

***With the above set up I solved a big issue for me...I am in a TRIO and play acoustic and electric and do lots of live looping with the band. Previously I had to drag 2 pedal boards with me, with 2 different looping/music pedals. Having the above set up really streamlined what I was doing and made gigging life a little easier.

***So now I have the PX8 and a few new pedals. I want to create a NEW board and replace some of the above pedals with some new ones but I am having a hard time deciding what is best. My band is still the TRIO and I still play acoustic and electric guitars and do LIVE looping. Here is what I would like to have on the new board and of course I only have 8 loop switches available with the PX8. I know not all pedals need to be in the PX8 and I know that I can chain a couple pedals together into the same switch patch if needed. below is what I am looking at for my new board:

1) Carl Martin Route Box
2) Polytune
3) Xotic Wah
4) Dunlop Volume/Expression Pedal
5) Xotic SP Compressor
6) Xotic BB plus overdrive
7) JHS pollinator V2 Fuzz
8) 3 leaf audio proton fliter
9) MXR univibe
10) MXR Script phase 90
11) Strymon Timeline delay
12) Strymon Flint (reverb/tremolo)
13) Xotic EP booster
14) tc electronics Ditto X2 looper
15) Voodoo Lab PX8 switcher

Idea help please!
Any helpful ideas would be great. Thank you!

Well the A/B switch, Tuner, Wah, Volume, and Looper are all easy candidates for leaving out of PX-8 Loops so that should narrow this down some right away.
Anything that is in use all the time, or very infrequently, could also perhaps be left out depending on what it is. (i.e. something used infrequently that is true bypass can be left out, but if its something with a "bad" buffer then you may want to keep it in a loop.)

The TimeLine could go in the Insert on the PX-8 (if your second list is also implying signal path) and you would have eight pedals left to have individual loops. This would also allow you to have the Timeline always be in the signal path if you were to use it's looper functions too.

I hope that helps!

Thanks John I appreciate it. I actually ran out of space on my board and taking your advice I am leaving the A/B switch, Wah, tuner and looper out of the PX8 switcher. I will deal with the A/B and looper off board which I am fine with.
I actually had the Wah and Fuzz routed together into loop #1 (I rarely use the Wah) and am suspicious that somehow the Fuzz is sounding odd.
The advice I get is that a Wah should always be placed AFTER a fuzz. I want my JHS V2 fuzz in a loop but putting it by itself into loop #1 will mean the fuzz will be AFTER my wah since I am leaving it out of the switcher.

I am going guitar > tuner > Wah > then into my PX8.

In your opinion is that going to work ok? I'll test it tonight but was just curious of your thoughts on where to put a germanium Fuzz in the PX8?
Thanks,
Scott

hmm... Well if the Wah is only ever used when the Fuzz is on, then you can still run both in Loop 1 and keep the Fuzz in front of the Wah.
1. Run the Loop 1 Send to the In of the Fuzz.
2. Run the Out of the Fuzz to the In of the Wah.
3. Run the Out of the Wah to the Return of Loop 1.
