High End Roll Off with PX-8?

Post by PDC »

Just got a used but very clean Dingbat Medium / PX-8 board with Mondo Power. Got everything set up and it all works perfectly. Great set-up. It may be just my ears, but I almost think the effects - particularly my Flanger - do not sound as prominent or noticable through the PX-8 loops as they did all chained together on the floor. My knee-jerk tells me that this really should be the other way around - that individual, isolated loops should provide more noticable ‘fidelity’ of each effect than chained together on the floor. Has anyone else noticed this using the PX-8? Are my ears just fatigued after a LONG day of measuring, routing, and zip-tying cables???

FWIW - this board included all the ‘lava’ patch cables that the previous owner had used to set up his rig. The 90* ends are the ‘solderless’ version that have a spike in the center of the plug end and an Allen screw to clamp the end down. I have never used this type of cable before. They are dead quiet with no static, but are these known to roll off a little high end? Should I spring for soldered Mogami patch cables to run between the effects and the PX-8?

Thank You All!

Well, I'm feeling pretty silly here, but figure if you're too proud to admit your own mistakes, then nobody learns from them. I had been using a Dingbat Small with an ISO-5 that has a single, dedicated 18v output which was perfect or my full size MXR Flanger. No Y-Adapter needed. I was paying so much attention to routing and zip-tying all my cables under the new board that I just plugged my Flanger into one of the 9v outs on the Mondo power supply. Poor fella' was trying to give me that signature Drop-D 'Unchained' Flange riff with only half the volts needed to properly pull it off! (But the red LED on the Flange did seem just a bright as ever.) Anyway, I've got my Y-cord down there feeding the Flanger from a pair of the 9 volt outputs and it sounds like a million bucks. All the other 9v effects really sound great - no high-end roll off or anything like that. I absolutely love the PX-8.
