Guitar Player Hendrix Demo

Post by frank9310 »

Hi James,
Your Hendrix demo on Guitar Player TV was fantastic!http://www.guitarplayertv.com/index.htm ... vwfuzzface

Can you tell me what type speakers were used? Does thack thick tone come mostly from the head or speakers or both? I have a JTM45 Reissue and can't get close to that tone through a Vintage 30, Greenback, G12H30 etc.

Is the amp EL34 based and original 66, clone or modded?

Many thanks,
Frank

Thanks Frank!

The head is a stock 1966 JTM50 with EL34 tubes. At the time I did that, it had a set of old Mullard power tubes. I used a stock Marshall cab with original 25-watt speakers.

The biggest problem I have with this stuff is that unless you can get the volume up, the head sounds thin, and the speakers aren't moving air. I think I mentioned it one of those vids, but I do use a THD Hot Plate. That allows me to get the head up in volume so the preamp and power tubes are working, and then I can scale the overall output volume back.

Another thing is those heads usually have a bright cap hard-wired on the first input volume knob. (Same type of thing like on a Twin Reverb, but at least that's on a switch.) So, there it is again, the lower the volume on your amp, the brighter it is. And with a fuzz? Watch out. Razor blades!!!

My suggestion would be to try your rig with a Hot Plate on it. I love mine!

Hey thanks James. In any case, it sounds fantastic! I used to have a THD Hot Plate but hated how it fizzed out at low volumes. So I installed that Lar/Mar PPIMV Master volume kit based on Ken Fischer's Rich Mod on the Metroamp forum site. It allows you to max out the voule and sounds really good with master down low albeit not as good as pushing max air. It kind of seems to have more harmonics for some reason. Check out my JTM45 Reissue mod. It took about 30 minutes to install and works like a charm. http://areyouexperienced.net/Marshall-J ... arMarPPIMV
