Old VL Overdrive

Hi Guys......a newbie here.

I have an old Voodoo Lab Overdrive pedal (2 knob, no LED), which I extremely like. It utilizes a TL072 chip as the op amp.

However, I've recently begun experiencing a problem. When the pedal is engaged, and with anything but minimal Gain settings, the signal doesn't pass and I get a loud, ticking/thumping sound.

Anyone else ever had a similar experience with this pedal?

Any clue as to what might be wrong with it? I'd really hate to have to retire this pedal. It is, in my opinion, one of the best overdrive pedals ever produced.
