Looking to purchase, but I have a few question

Post by cjd »

I am considering purchasing the GCX Audio Switcher and Ground Control or Commander. I have a few questions.

1) The website says that the Ground Control can manage 4 GCX Audio switchers. The manual says that in order to handle more than 1 GCX you have to update the memory in the Ground Control. Is this still true? I can’t run 4 GCXs with the Ground Control out of the box? If not, what do I have to purchase? How much does it cost? Where do I get it from?

2) When I look at the manual and read the forums I see talk of expression pedals. However, I don’t see details about a Wah Pedal. How do you hook up and control a simple Cry-Baby Wah pedal and how is it controlled.?

3) I never see anything mentioned about twin pedals. I don’t see how the GCX and Ground Control can handle this. Is it possible to hook up twin pedals such as the Boss dd-20 or Digitech Jam Man?

4) Can the Ground Control be used with the Boss GT-Pro.

5) The last few have to do with the pedal switchers and Commander.

a. The web sites says the Commander can control and unlimited number of pedal switchers. Does this need additional memory to do this?
b. It is mentioned that you can use more than 1 Commander. Do the Commanders have to have the same presets or can they be different?
c. What is needed to run more than 1 Commander? How much does it cost and where do I get it from?
d. How many Commanders can be used?

Thanks for the help. Once I know the answers, I will know how to proceed.

Some of this information does seem conflicting so allow me to clarify...

1) The original Ground Control requires the expanded memory in order to control multiple GCX switchers. The Ground Control Pro on the other hand will do this without any upgrades needed, as stated on the site.

2) A wah pedal is best left out of a switching system in my opinion. I of the opinion that because I have to have my foot on it in order to control it anyway, I see no point in making it's bypass switch be elsewhere. So a wah is connected as usual. A traditional wah pedal is quite easily modified for true bypass.

3) The GCX, as well as the Control Switcher can interface the CTL PEDAL jack on the Boss Twin pedals.

4) The Ground Control or the Ground Control Pro can be used with the Boss GT-Pro as well as any MIDI device that responds to MIDI Program Change and MIDI Control Change messages.

5)
a. No expanded memory is needed for the Commander to control any number of Switchers.
b. Running multiple Commanders would be for multiple stage positions, the presets would be the same.
c. The second Commander would need a custom cable that applies 9VAC to pins 1 and 3 of its MIDI out jack. Any custom shop should be able to make this.
d. As many as you want I suppose, but they will all recall the same 10 presets. Again, the point of running multiple Commanders would be to have control of the rig from multiple stage positions and not to increase the preset count. For more presets you would want to step up to the Ground Control Pro.

I hope that helps!
