Hi
I have a couple of technical questions
I have in my gear a GCX e I plan soon as possible get a next GCX and i'm wondering how the GCP distinguishes the GCX1 from GCX2? How it know when i sending a CC#80 or CC#104 messages is to GCX1 and not to GCX2 since both work on channel 16!
Can i configure my Rocktron Xpression (or other rack) to respond as GCX3, I mean, to simplify the setup i would like to set FX1 do respond to CC#80/104 FX2 to CC#81/105 and so on. Can the GCP handle this?
Thanks

GCP MIDI mapping GCX1-GCX2-3rd
Re: GCP MIDI mapping GCX1-GCX2-3rd
It's a simple matter of properly configuring your Ground Control Pro. When you add the second GCX, you will have to enable it in the GCPro, after which you will program your GCPro presets to send whatever MIDI information you desire to GCX1 and/or to GCX2. See Pages 10 and 11 in the Ground Control Manual.
For Sale: Original DMC GCX in Excellent Condition ($275) and a far more versatile SoundSculpture GL also in Excellent Condition ($1750). Free CONUS Shipping.

I know how to configure the CGCP to use 4 expanders, my curiosity is how the GCP differs each GCX, if all are in the same channel using same CC!nyteowl wrote:It's a simple matter of properly configuring your Ground Control Pro. It's is more a technical issue then operating!
Re: GCP MIDI mapping GCX1-GCX2-3rd
I'm sorry if I misunderstood your question, but is this is what you asked first:
"...I'm wondering how the GCP distinguishes the GCX1 from GCX2? How it know when i sending a CC#80 or CC#104 messages is to GCX1 and not to GCX2 since both work on channel 16!"
...and that is what my answer addressed. Within each preset on the GCPro one programs the parameters for each individual Expander, thus telling the GCPro what specific information to send to which GCX.
Then you asked this:
"Can I configure my Rocktron Xpression (or other rack) to respond as GCX3, I mean, to simplify the setup i would like to set FX1 do respond to CC#80/104 FX2 to CC#81/105 and so on. Can the GCP handle this?"
...which sounds like you want to fool your GCP into recognizing your Rocktron Expression as an additional GCX. I may be wrong, but I do not believe that is possible because they are two totally different devices from two totally different manufacturers, one being a multi-loop switching device and the other a Multi-FX unit.
Perhaps I am still confused, but I suspect what you are looking for is a way to send multiple MIDI Messages using a single IA button on your GCX, for example, you want IA Button 1 to change to Loop 3 on GCX1, Loop 7 on GCX2, and send a specific CC message to your Rocktron by fooling your GCX into thinking it is GCX3. If that's the case, I still believe the answer is no, this cannot be done, as per this excerpt from the bottom of Page 10 in your GCPro Manual:
You can redefine each button to control any one of the following:
• Any loop of your GCX Guitar Audio Switcher(s).
• Start and Stop a MIDI sequencer.
• Send a MIDI continuous controller on/off message.
...with the operative phrase there being "...any one of the following:" You can do any one of those things with a single GCPro IA Button, but only one, and while you can change multiple loops across multiple GCX units if you choose that option, it is not currently possible to do that and send CC messages to other external devices at the same time.
However, I do recall reading something about there maybe being a firmware upgrade in Beta testing that might allow you to do that, so would suggest you contact Voodoo Lab Customer Support directly via email and see if they can supply a better answer for you.
In the event I am still confused about what you're trying to accomplish, please forgive my misunderstanding.

Re: GCP MIDI mapping GCX1-GCX2-3rd
Sorry for my bad english! Apologies for my confused post!
I'll try to be direct!
I want to my GCP recognize a Rocktron Expression as an additional GCX, yes.
Although they are different manufacturers, be a multi-loop switching device or a Multi-FX unit is irrelevant, because both devices communicate via MIDI protocol, so I believe this setting is possible!
A simple scenario:
I want to push a single IA button1 on GCP that will act over Loop1 on GCX1, Loop1 on GCX2 and one FX or preset on Xpression (where is assign CC#80).
In the next days I will perform some tests with help of a MIDI monitor I'll follow this messages exchange!
Operationally I know how to proceed, but I would like to hear from someone who experienced something like that!
Thanks

Re: GCP MIDI mapping GCX1-GCX2-3rd
I can help with the GCX portion.
Once you enable a GCX (or multiple GCXs) in the Ground Control Pro under Expanders, the Ground Control Pro sends a MIDI SysEx message to auto configure how the GCX units will respond. This MIDI SysEx message assigns the Controller Number set for each GCX in the MIDI path. The first GCX in the MIDI chain gets assigned as GCX-1, the second GCX as GCX-2...
Basically, the Ground Control Pro auto configures the GCX units so you don't have to worry about what Channel or Controller Number each one uses.
As for adding the Xpression, sure you could program it to respond to the GCX#3 Controller Numbers, but I think that will just make things more difficult in the long run since you will be giving up the ability to have the Xpression respond also to Program Changes.
If you instead set up the Xpression on its own MIDI Channel you will be able to recall its numbered patches with Ground Control Pro presets. You can then assign Ground Control Pro Instant access buttons to send Controller Change messages on the same MIDI Channel so you can have access to direct parameters like individual effect bypass and tap tempo.
I hope that helps!

Re: GCP MIDI mapping GCX1-GCX2-3rd
My apologies for not fully understanding the situation, but I was confused as to why you wanted to treat the Rocktron as an additional GCX (GCX3) instead of simply adding it as a MIDI device.
Again, my fault for assuming, but I thought you were aware that, to paraphrase what John said, you could simply add the Rocktron as a MIDI device on your GCPro - on its own MIDI Channel - so you could recall the desired Rocktron patches via your GCPro presets, as described in the simple scenario you outlined in a previous message. In addition, you could assign GCPro IA buttons to send CC# messages to the Rocktron on its assigned MIDI Channel to give you access to direct parameters like individual effect bypass and tap tempo.
Again, I am sorry for any confusion or misdirection I may have caused.

Re: GCP MIDI mapping GCX1-GCX2-3rd
Hi
Absolutely, I know that I can add the Xpression as a ordinary MIDI device (that's how it's today), but I think for my case do the Xpression go through as GCX2* is the better choice. If Xpression assume the role of a GCX2 I'll need to make the MIDI assigns only in the Xpression then the GPC will automatically recognize it. (rarely i use separately effects on the Xpression)
I took apart my rack in the last weekend, I'll begin to reassemble it and when I have news I'll share.
Thanks
Luciano S. T.
*due to Brazil's financial condition, probably i'll not be able to buy the new GCX
