GCX, GCP, Strymon Timeline, Midi Amp, and Effects Loop

Post by mikef09 »

Hello, I'm new here and had a few questions. I am thinking of putting together a Midi Rig consisting of a 3 channel Carvin Legacy 3, a GCX, and a GCP to control everything. I'd want to control a Strymon Timeline Via Midi in the amps effects loop as well as a Hardwire Supernatural or a Strymon Big Sky, and would want the trails to continue after I switch them off. How would I logically do this with the GCX and GCP? Rig would be as follows:

Guitar
TC Electronic Vortex
Barber Tone Press
VFE Focus Mid Boost
Mooer Noise Killer
Amp Input

Effects Send
Timeline
Reverb
Effects Return

OK so I went with a Timeline and a Big Sky from Strymon. I want to be able to change channels on the Legacy as well as use the boost and reverb as instant access buttons and change presets on the Timeline and Big Sky via Ground Control pro via MIDI. The other pedals will be in the loops of the GCX. My big question is how will I be able to change banks on the Strymons via instant access buttons?

You can use IAs to duplicate the Footswitches of the Strymons. This lets you change Presets and Banks spontaneously, but you need three IAs per Device (in your case thats 6 of 8 IAs!).

I have my GCP set up like this:
IA 1: Amp Channel switching
IA 2: Amp EQ on/off
IA 3: Amp Reverb on/off
IA 4: Amp Solo Boost
IA 5: Strymon Mobius Bypass/Engage
IA 6: Strymon Mobius Tap
IA 7: Strymon Timeline Bypass/Engage
IA 8: Strymon Timeline Tap
Strymon Presets are programmed within the GCP Presets.
Every Preset on the GCP represents a Combination of Mobius/Timeline-Presets.
This means, you can´t change Presets spontaneously, but you can switch a pre-programmed Preset on or off and control the Amp.
Since i habe only about 20 combinations of Effects i really like, i can switch between them relativly fast and control every function i need in a live situation.

Thanks for the info midifail, I had another question though. I'd want to send program changes via the bottom 4 buttons on the ground control pro as amp presets (clean, crunch, rhythm, lead) and use the other 8 buttons as IA buttons. I'd want to send program changes to the Strymons as well with the presets and the use IA buttons to turn them on and off. Would that be possible? I was under the assumption the GCP can do this, I'm going to use a Mission TT-L out of the GCP for Tap Tempo of the Timeline. Also, I'd only be using 2 IA buttons per preset (since I don't use more than that in a song).

Is your amp midi? From the IA button description it looks like it's a Mesa.

You would have to configure your GCPro to 4-Presets/Bank mode, and identify your Legacy as MIDI Device 1 and your Strymon as MIDI Device 2. See Pages 6 and 7 in the GCPro Manual for naming MIDI Devices, and Page 14 for configuring for 4-Presets/Bank.

When programming your GCPro Presets into bottom-row Buttons 1 thru 4 (see the section entitled Edit Preset, starting on Page 16), you can program each preset with the desired Legacy channel (Device 1), the desired Strymon program (Device 2), and any combination of IA Buttons On or Off as needed.

Thanks for the info! Ya that's what I figured after I read the manual a little more thoroughly!

Ok so I programmed as follows and it's giving me MAJOR problems. I have the first 4 IA buttons on the GCP to control the 4 pedals in the GCX, the amp's boost as IA 5, Timeline as 6, Big Sky as 7, and Timeline Tap as 8 (no problems with this).

My problem is when I save presets on the bottom 4 Preset buttons, it will randomly change the channel back to distortion when I saved preset one as a clean channel for example. I have the Legacy set to Midi Channel 1, Timeline as 2, and Big Sky as 3.

So how do I program the Legacy to save the preset that I want saved and not randomly change it back to the distortion channel?

Well I sent it back because it had to be something with the midi card.

I got a Blackstar Series One 1046L6 which seems like it's easier to control. It's set to OMNI mode in it's stock form. So if I use the 4 Preset mode w/ IA buttons, in OMNI will it just change channels ie (1 clean, 2 crunch, 3 OD 1, 4 OD 2). Would I then run the Timeline as Midi Channel 1 and Big Sky as Midi Channel 2, then set up program changes for them?

Any help would be appreciated!

OMNI mode simply means your Blackstar's default state is to receive and respond to MIDI information on all 16 MIDI channels. You will still have to program your GCPro to tell it what you want it to do.

It might be best to configure your Blackstar as Device 1 on your GCPro using Channel 1, then configure your Timeline as GCPro Device 2 on Channel 2, and your Big Sky as GCPro Device 3 on Channel 3.

That's what I was thinking, thanks dude!
