GCP/GCX Question

Post by c diddy 5000 »

I was watching a YouTube video earlier today that showed someone setting their GCX/GCP rig. This rig had 2 GCX switchers, one turning on loops for pedals, and the 2nd selected amps. This got me thinking... Is it possible to "trick" the GCP into seeing my one GCX as "GCX2" so that I can free up what my GCP sees as "GCX1" to be configured for midi CC of external devices? I have read that if you use multiple GCX switchers with a non-GCP controller, you need a special chip installed to have the other switchers respond to a different set of midi CC. Would something like this be required to pull this off, or is this even possible?

I'm thinking the short answer here is No because your GCPro will be looking for two MIDI devices while you have only one device connected to it.

What are you currently controlling with your GCPro/GCX, and how many additional external devices do you want to control? Without that information, it's impossible to offer alternate solutions.

I currently have an Echo Pro, a Mobius and a Torpedo Live and the GCX, which handles channel switching and a couple pedals... I guess i was trying to see if i could save the IA switches exclusively for MIDI CC as opposed to sacrificing a few for the internal GCX loops. Realistically, I get along just fine, but i was just looking for new clever ways to make what I have do more...

You couldn't make the one GCX in your rig respond as GCX #2, but you might be able to use the GCX #2 Control Change messages to control whatever it is you are trying to ultimately do.

What device(s) are you hoping to send these Control Change messages to?

Well this is interesting.... By default, what channel/CC#s are used for GCX 2, 3, & 4? Ultimately, all my other devices can be set to these specific values....

The Ground Control Pro will default to using MIDI Channel 16 for all GCX communication as long as you don't define a Device in the MIDI Channel/Name section as using channel 16.

Here are the Controller numbers for the additional GCX #s

GCX #2
Normal (Latching) = 88-95 / Momentary = 112-119

GCX #3
Normal (Latching) = 64-71 / Momentary = 96-103

GCX #4
Normal (Latching) = 56-63 / Momentary = 72-79

With some careful filtering down stream you may be able to get away with setting your target device to Omni Mode so it will still get the Program Changes on the MIDI Channel defined within the Ground Control Pro wile also responding to the Control Change messages on MIDI Channel 16.

So what device(s) and parameters are you looking to control... I ask because I might have done this before and can help speed up the process ;)

I currently have a Digitech GSP1101, Line 6 Echo Pro, Strymon Möbius, and 2 Two Notes Torpedo Lives in addition to the pedals and control functions that would be handled by my GCX.

So you want to have Control Change messages control which parameters on which of these pieces of gear? ;)

So after reviewing my list, the gsp and echo pro can be setup as needed. The möbius might prove to be more of a problem, as the cc's are fixed. Any thought? You mentioned "careful filtering" (i think that's what you said at least...) what would you do with this setup? I forgot to mention I also have a source audio eq and potentially a whammy pedal (if I can have enough options for control...).
