GSP1101 and Ground Control Pro as Stompbox

Post by cschneider »

I am trying to find out if it is possible to configure the GC Pro with the Digitech GSP1101 to run in Stompbox mode. This is the same type of mode called 5-Patch for the Digitech Control 2 board. This will allow the foot controller to be assigned various effects, so all the if the user presses a button it will turn an effect on or off.

I can get it to switch program banks, but if I want to simply say turn off a chorus or flanger I have not figured out if the unit can work with the 1101 this way. I really do not want to buy a Control 2 to do this.

Thanks,

Chris

If you set the Ground Control Pro to 4 Presets per Bank mode you will gain eight Instant Access buttons. These Instant Access buttons can be programmed to send the necessary Control Change that toggles individual effects on and off within your processor. Refer to the MIDI Continuous Controller On/Off portion of the Instant Access section under Setup Mode in the Ground Control Pro manual for specific programming information. The manual for the GSP1101 should have either a chart with hard coded Control Change numbers associated with specific effects or show the steps needed to assign these to the desired effects. Good luck!

John,

Wanted to let you know that I was able to get it working. You got me pointed into the right direction!

I even typed up a procedure to get it done:

You must do a handful of things.

1. Decide how you want your switches set up for example on my GCPRO:

Switches:
#1 = Compressor
#2 = Distortion
#3 = Noise Gate
#4 = Chorus/Flanger
#5 = Delay
#6 = Reverb

2. Next put your GSP1101 in Patch 5 mode of course and find your MIDI channel.
Press select knob to select
Goto 'MIDI MENU' and press select knob
Note your current channel, if there is none set then set one.
press the 'BACK' button on your GSP1101
Goto 'FOOTCONTROLLER' option and press select knob
Press controller on 'SWITCH MODE' to until it reads 5 patch mode

3. Store your settings.

4. Next you will need to code your effects to assign a CC to each effect in the program that you want to be able to turn on/off.

Go to your preset on the 1101 and press the select knob to select your program.

Select 'Edit effects' --> Select the effect you want

Turn the effect off. (I leave mine off so I can turn them off via the switches)

Press and hold the select knob : "HOLD <SELECT> TO EDIT LINK"
You should see something like "CONTROLLER: NOT LINKED" press the select knob again and select your CC you want to assign by turning the select wheel.
Press select knob again to go back.

Repeat this for each effect you want to turn on/off via your Ground Control Unit.

5. Store the preset!

Once you have done this for the 4 presets you want. It's time to link them to the Ground control unit.

On the Ground Control Pro unit
Press both SETUP buttons to go into SETUP MODE
Press #6 switch (INSTANT ACCESS button)

Press the +/YES (4) button until you see 1.CH01 CTL001

Lets break this display down:

1. = button 1
2. = button 2
3. = button 3
etc..

CH## = your midi channel # that the GSP1101 responds to (1-16)
CTL### = CC code that you have assigned to each effect (0-127)

(NOTE 1. = button #1 first row, so 2. is button #2 and so on)

Keep pressing it until you see the correct MIDI channel you identified in step #2
Press CURSOR RIGHT (>) to change the CTL # to what you assigned the effect you want the button to be (this is the CC # you assigned in step #4)
Press BANK DOWN to go to the next bank and repeat these steps for each effect you want to assign a button to.

Press both setup buttons again to exit

That's it.

Hope this helps others that have this unit in conjunction with the Digitech GSP1101.

One minor detail about this is that I'm not sure setting the "5 patch mode" that you describe is necessary. I don't recall ever having to do this. All of your other directions are spot on, but i feel you may be doing more than is needed. I think i steered away from this menu option is because i assumed that the foot controller feature just applied to the proprietary controller for this unit. Either way, if it works, great! thanks for putting this info up for others btw...
