Ground loop with multiple amps plugged

Post by mamornr »

Hi!
i have this problem...
i use the Gcx to switch between 3 different amps
but everytime it starts an annoying HUM...
i power up the three amps thru a furman power conditioner..
should i think about cutting any of the ground wire on the mains lead of two heads?
isn't that dangeorus?
thank you

I would try an Ebtech hum eliminator to isolate the amps. You could either get 2 of the 2 channel units or the rackmount 8 channel unit for about the same money. I would suggest inserting it right before the amp input. I find when you use one, you need to keep the amps grounded for the best results.

The ebtech WILL suck tone unless you get the humX.

In this situation, you need isolation transformers. I have 2 amps/preamps and would have dealt with this situation.

What I use is the lehle p-split II. I use it a little differently though, I do NOT use the split out only the transformer out. You'd have to put one on 2 of the 3 amps(between the gcx loop out and the head amp your using). gcx send -> p-split II input -> P-split transformer out -> amp input.

Basically my switcher a/b's my guitar signal between the amps....between the output of one loop into the head/preamp I put the lehle. It's a very good Isolation tranny...I like to think of it as an isolation transformer first, and a quality splitter second.

You NEVER want to unplug the gound on your power cable, it IS dangerous. Only for quick testing. Save yourself some time and get the p-split II.
