Well if you can force the LS42 to listen on MIDI channel 16 and respond to Control Change messages 80-83 then you will be able to do what you want to do. I must point out again that the only way to make the Instant Access buttons act independently from the presets, as you are wanting to do, requires that they are set as GCX loop controllers and that the "GCX" they are set to control is disabled within the Ground Control Pro presets. (Note: this "GCX" has to be enabled within Setup Mode.)

So the first question/concept is this... Can you force the LS42 to respond to Control Change messages 80-83? If not, what Control Change messages will it respond to? (I can find no mention of specific Control Change numbers in the linked manual)

The second question/concept is this... Are you forced to use a channel between 1-15 for non soft switching? Do you require that it be set to non soft switching?

Let me know what you can.

Yes, that's possible; they will control loops 1 through 4. 84 And 85 control the two switches.

Channel 15 is for non-soft switching and channel 16 is for soft-switching. I much prefer non-soft as the soft switching pops a little and the "fade-in" is really annoying.

So that we're absolutely clear: the IA switches do work independently from the presets now. It's only the corresponding Led's that aren't cooperating.
I've introduced a device called "switcher" and disabled that in the presets (--).

No, they are not working independently. If you press an Instant Access button to activate it, then press any preset, the Instant Access button switches to the off state.
What you want is for an Instant Access button that you have activated to remain as set regardless of any preset button pressed. This can only be achieved by forcing your switcher to act as if it were a GCX and disabling the GCX within your presets, thus removing GCX settings from the preset. The GCX is disabled within a Ground Control Pro preset by pressing the No button when you are looking at the "GCX-1" screen while in Edit Preset mode. Entering a "--" to a device name is not the same thing.

OK so you will need to set up your LS42 audio loops to respond to Control Change messages 80-83 on MIDI channel 15.

After that is done you will need to enable GCX-1 under Expanders within Setup Mode on the Ground Control Pro. You will also need to assign the Instant Access switches that will control the loops on the LS42 to the appropriate GCX Loop #(1,2,3, or 4) for GCX-1. Do not assign them to a defined MIDI Channel and Control Change number.
For this next part we will trick the Ground Control Pro into sending the GCX messages on MIDI channel 15 rather than 16... this is done by assigning any device in the Device Name/Channel list to MIDI channel 16. You can create a dummy device location for this or you can re-assign an existing device to communicate on MIDI channel 16.

*The LS42 will NOT be one of the devices you will be naming in this list.*

If you do this as described, you will have Instant Access buttons controlling your switcher loops that are 100% independent from the Ground Control Pro presets.
