Ableton 10 and GCP issues

So I searched the forums and found a few threads but nothing recent and those threads provided no real help to me. I use Ableton as part of my stage rig and wanted to use the ground control to trigger loops using abletons built in looper and toggle effects. I planned on using it by plugging into the MIDI in on my audio interface or the one on my midi keyboard to route it into the computer. I see both midi ports listed in abletons menu and they are enabled as control surfaces but the program isn't reading the messages. I tried to use Abletons MIDI assignment menu to rig the controls and it wont learn the controls properly. I got it to assign once and the switch was listed but the program didnt respond when i pressed it. Now i cant get any other switches to assign. Anyone have more complete guidance on what I may be doing wrong here?
