Help with GCX and CAE rs-10

Post by GregDClark »

I received a RS-10 and a GCX rack yesterday.

I plan on using it for control over 5 pedals, and the bypassing of a Suhr Mini Mix II into a T.C. Electronics G sharp.

All that into a Quinn Amps SDO-R (Dumble Overdrive Reverb clone)

All in a 5 space rack powered by a Furman Pwr conditioner.

This whole rack switching device thing is quite new to me though.

The problem I'm having is this:

How do I send power from the GCX to the CAE RS-10? I know that the Midi Pin out is different so I can't seem to get the CAE RS-10 to power up using a 5 pin Din plug (a plug with all 5 pins connected).

My CAE RS-10 was originally custom made for "Prince" for a vocal rig and is only technically an RS-6 (with only 8x Presets, 6 Direct access controllers, and 32 Banks). It has a 7 pin Midi In Jack and a 7 pin Midi Out Jack on the back.

What amp I doing wrong?

Thanks Guys!

I've been chasing this for a few weeks - I recently added a Liquid Foot controller to replace my Ground Control Pro, and the LF requires 7-pin phantom power midi, like the CAE.

The GCX puts out 9VAC on pins 1 and 3, but the CAE rs-10 is looking for power on pins 6 and 7.
Unfortunately, nobody makes that cable commercially, so you'll have to get it custom made or make it yourself. It seems redco.com is a popular place to get some mogami midi cable and the appropriate neutrik midi plugs, for cheap (relatively).

Ok I talked to Bob Bradshaw last night. He said the same thing:

"Just bend pins 1 to 3 and 6 to 7 and solder them."

If not this it what can be used:

What's in red - I'm not sure what that means.... bend pins where? If it's on the inside of the plug, you'll need to connect 1 to 6 and 3 to 7. Connecting 1 to 3 will short circuit the power supply.

And as for the Rocktron cable: it won't do anything to send power from your GCX. You must use an external power supply. All the cable does is allow you to connect the power supply where your rack is. Also, be aware that the DC plug on the Rocktron cable is not your standard inner diameter barrel plug. I found this out the hard way.
