Hum noise gcx and rack system

Post by Eddie Strato 70 »

Hi,
I've got a rack system that are causing me a lot of problems because of an incredible hum noise, which it seems to be caused from the GCX.
I don't know if I have made a mistake with the connections..

I write my connections and I hope that someone of you could kindly help me..

From my guitar I go into a tuner which is connected to a wha pedal.
The wha go into the guitar IN of the GCX.
And now:
Feed thru in loop1: dod yjm and NS-2.
Loop 2: Chorus CH-1
Loop 3: Flanger BF-3
And from the output of loop 3 I go into my amp, an ENGL screamer 50.
Now from the send return of my amp I connect the send into the loop 4 where I have a boost and in loop 5 I have a delay (korg dl8000r). From the output of loop 5 I go into the return of my amp.
Loop 6 and 7 are dedicated to the switching of amp's channels.

All my stompboxes are feed with the Artec power brick.

Sorry for my english..
Thank you!

Couple questions for you.

1) Have you tried running your rig in a different circuit and/or location? (ie jamspot or home or other)

2) Is the hum present when your fx loop is enabled or disabled?

3) Are your power and audio cables separated within the rack? Or are they crossing each other all over the place?

Its gonna come down to a process of elimination to reduce/remove hum. Try pluggin your guitar right into the amp, do you still hear the hum? If no, try adding your tuner and wah in front of your amp and see what happens, still no hum? If no, add the the pedals to your fx loop and retest. I recommend doing these tests without using the GCX. It's highly unlikely the GCX is causing the hum but you wont know until you do a little testing. Let us know what you find.

On a side note, when I set my rig up at home, it sounded great with no hum or noise I wasnt expecting. As soon as I hooked it up at my buddies jamshack, it hummed like a...... you know what Im talkin about! Reason being that a fridge (to keep the beer cold of coarse) was on the same circuit, as soon as the compressor on the fridge fired up I was doomed! Just food for thought.

I tried every single stomp and the problem wasn't present, but when I finally tried to connect a pedal to the GCX an enormous hum began!! From here I've deducted that the problem is my GCX, so I'll send it to voodoo lab..
By the way my cables are separated and the problem is present everywhere I go.

Thank you!
If you have more advice I really accept them!:)

I guess your next step would be to contact Voodoo labs directly. Let us know when you rectify the hum problem.

is your GCX in a rack? Take it out and see if that helps. I had that and put some washers between the rack and the GCX

Can you try running the output of you wah directly into the In of GCX Loop 1?

Yes, I've tried it, but the problem remained. Now I sent my gcx to voodoo lab for an inspection. If it is not the gcx probably I have some problems with my amp..
