GCX Audio Switcher

Post by rodzimguitar68 »

Guys,

I am new to the GCX. I have my wireless output plugged into input 1 and an overdrive pedal in loop #1. The rest of my loops are daisy chained and the output of the last one goes to amps.

I want to know how I could enable myself to bypass my wireless and plug into the front panel jacks, if I were ever to experience wireless interference or problems with dying batteries during a performance.

I'd like to maintain the clean look on the front of my rack, by having all the connections remain in the rear, BUT I'd like to keep a guitar cable handy, that I could plug into the front panel of the GCX in case of emergency, or even when I'm at home and programming my rack, so I can bypass my wireless unit, and not have to do any cable swapping in the back.

Can you help explain it to me in detail?

Thanks,

Rodney

I'm pretty sure this will work...

Plug your wireless into the Feed Thru jack on the back and connect a short jumper cable from the Guitar Out jack to the Loop 1 Input jack. This should feed your wireless signal to Loop 1.

In the event you have any issues with your wireless, be sure to turn it off, then plug a cable into the Guitar In jack on the front.

Hope this helps...

The GCX responds to MIDI CC messages. I am not sure if your amp sends multiple control messages. There are 8 loops, so you would presumably need to send 8 CC messages if you want to dictate which ones are triggered with a program change.

I have a Liquid Foot midi foot controller, so I think you might want to investigate getting a foot controller capable of sending more CC messages.

Good luck.

mwdanny70,

This is direct from Page 3 of the Carvin V3 Operating Manual:

MIDI
MIDI PROGRAMMING FEATURES:
The V3 will save the following settings in a MIDI program patch (1 thru 100):
a.)The channel selection 1, 2, or 3.
b.)The LOOP1 and LOOP2 on/off settings.
c.)The BOOST on/off setting.
Volume, tone, and drive mode settings will not be saved.

TO ENTER MIDI / PROGRAM MODE:
1.) Hold down the channel SELECT switch for the channel setting you wish to save (1,2,or 3).
2.) While holding down the first switch in step 1, press the other two SELECT switches, and release all three at the same time. The LOOP1 LED will be flashing.
3.) From your MIDI controller, select (send) the MIDI patch number you wish to save. The LOOP2 LED will flash once to confirm. Normal operation is resumed.
To turn the BOOST on before saving the patch, (perform steps 1 and 2 above) then press and release the LOOP 1 switch. The green BOOST LED will come on. Then perform steps 1-3 to save patch.

TO CHANGE THE MIDI RECEIVE CHANNEL:
1.) Press and release all 3 channel SELECT switches on the front panel. The LOOP1 LED will be flashing.
2.) Choose MIDI channel 1, 2, or 3 by pressing the SELECT switch 1, 2, or 3. The LOOP2 LED will flash once to confirm. Normal operation is resumed.

These instructions are fairly straight-forward, so if you take your time you shouldn't have any problems. However, I do recall an issue someone else had with a Carvin Legacy that turned out to be a bad board inside the amp. In the event you do experience any problems, you might want to check out the Carvin forum as well.

Yes! This works!! However, when I use the front panel input, the signal is hotter than when I use the rear feed thru. I can see the input lights on my gear are not getting the same signal. I am going to try to bring a cable from the wireless into the front of the GCX to see if it's the buffered input that is making the difference in signal. But for the short term, your help and answer was what I was looking for - being able to plug a guitar into the front, while at home rehearsing, or if I have wireless issues during a performance, so thanks for that.

It's quite possible that, as opposed to the buffered input causing the volume difference, your wireless unit may be the culprit. Does it have a Send Level control for adjusting the output volume? If so, perhaps you could increase the wireless output level to match the direct cable level..?

I am using a Line6 G90 and it doesn't have an output volume. I am going to run a cable from the wireless into the front panel buffered input and then see if the levels going to the first piece of rack gear is similar to if I just bypass the GCX and run the wireless output straight into the first device.

I didn't want a cable coming up to the front panel, but I also don't want to program with a certain volume when using the front panel input of the GCX and then use the rear panel thru from my wireless, and have that be a lower input volume into my gear, since it will change the gain structure of the presets I've created.
