GCP and Kemper - how are YOU using them together?

I jut ordered a GCP for my Kemper as I have some shows that just got booked unexpectedly and my Kemper Remote doesn't ship in time. Do most of you use the "4 Bank" method with I/A's or are you using "10 Bank"?

Also, I had a GCP for a minute when I first got my Kemper and for the life of me could not get them to play nice together. Any tips for a midi noob?

Thanks in advanced.

I think your best bet would be the 4-Presets/Bank mode, so you can use the 8 IA buttons to turn Effects on and off and activate other functions on the Kemper.

I was going to suggest checking on the Kemper forum, but I see you've already done that and I referred you here. :)

So the first thing you'll want to do is identify your Kemper as Device 1 on your GCPro. The section entitled Device Name/Channel starting on the bottom of Page 6 in the GCPro manual will walk you through that. Set the channel to Channel 1. While you're there, double check that the GCPro Start Number is set to 1 by referring to the section entitled Start Number on the bottom of Page 7.

The default setting on the GCPro is 10-Presets/Bank mode, so you'll want to change that to 4-Presets/Bank. Page 12 in the GCPro Manual explains how to do that. We're not done programming the GCPro yet, but let's move to the Profiler for a minute.

The default MIDI Channel setting on the Profiler is Omni, so your new GCPro should be communicating with your Profiler unless you've changed the Profiler's MIDI Channel, but before we get to that our next step is assigning Program Change numbers to the rigs in your Profiler.

The section entitled MIDI Settings starting on the bottom of Page 92 in the Kemper Profiler Reference Manual will walk you through assigning Program Change numbers, and this is also where you will find instructions on configuring your Kemper to respond to MIDI Channel 1.

Once you've got the GCPro changing rigs on your Profiler, you'll want to configure some IA Buttons to perform specific tasks. The section entitled Instant Access on Page 10 of the GCPro manual - and especially he section entitled MIDI Continuous Controller On/Off on Page 11 - explains how to configure IA buttons on the GCPro, and the section entitled MIDI and Remote Controller on Page 97 of the Kemper Profiler Reference Manual will provide you with the most commonly used CC#s for effects toggling (Page 99) and for Expression pedals (Page 98).

Which brings us to configuring Expression Pedals. You'll first want to make the connections as shown in the diagram at the bottom of Page 3 of the GCPro Manual, then refer to the section entitled Using Expression Pedals on the bottom of Page 19 of the GCPro manual, which will walk you through setting up your pedal(s). Plug in the appropriate CC# as shown on Page 99 of the Profile Reference Manual and you should be good to go.

I know this sounds like a lot, but take it slow, step-by-step, and you'll be up and running before you know it.

Thank you SO much! This is exactly what I was looking for! My GCP came in today and MAN is it clean! The buttons don't look like they have ever been stepped on. I got it used online for a steal. There were no pics but for the price I was willing to take the risk. I have the Mission expression pedal designed for the Kemper.so I am looking forward to getting that set up as well.

It's working pretty good so far but doesn't seem to remember that "unit starts at 1" setting. I'll need to do a little trouble shooting but overall I am digging it. Thanks for the walkthrough!

The default GCPro Start Number is "1" so you really shouldn't have had to make a change there.

If you're sure you've got the numbers right on your Kemper, enter Set Up Mode on your GCPro (Page 6), make sure the Start Number is set to "1" (Page 7), then and answer Yes when exiting Set Up Mode (Page 6).
