RUNNING GROUP OF PEDALS IN EFFECTS LOOP OF MULTIPLE AMPS

Post by cjd »

I would like to run a group of 3 pedals into the effects loops of 3 different amplifiers. What is the proper way to do this?

Thanks

this is a problem i have had too. from what i can find no one has made a unit specifically to do this. i worked out a way to use the gcx to switch loops on two amps but this would mean using four gcx loops just to change the selected fx loop. if you want to use ethe other amps while the pedals are in another loop this makes things harder. think the sound sculpture switchblades might do it but very pricey.

The proper way... get two more sets of pedals ;)

It can, and has been done. Really what you are doing is selecting one of three preamp sections, sending that to the effects, then selecting one of three power amp sections. That sounds all nice and neat as written, but it has some drawbacks and potential problems. First up is that, as mentioned above, you will need 4 loops just to handle which effect loop section is "live". Depending on the amps used, perhaps two more loops to mute the inputs of the unused amps. Next is that unless the three amps are identical, the output of the preamp sections will likely be different, requiring differing settings on the effects anyway. Further, although it is quite easily remedied with careful planning, there is large potential for ground loops.
On the plus side, if everything behaves, you get the possibility of mixing and matching the different preamp and poweramp sections between the amplifiers.
