Pedal Power 2 Plus and Tech 21 Fly Rig 5

Post by Univibe63 »

Hi All,

I'd like to ask the best option (and if it's feasable and safe...) regarding PP2+ with a Tech 21 Fly Rig 5.

Is it OK to use output (1-4) with corresponding dip in the ON position with a Tech 21 Fly Rig 5?

I'm asking because I see Fly Rig 5 comes with a 12V power supply (center negative), and Power 2 Plus could provide 12.3V through the above configuration.

Thank You
Giovanni

No problem at all to use any one of outputs 1-4 with the corresponding DIP switch set away from Normal for the Fly Rig 5.

I hope that helps!

EDIT: It appears that some users have had trouble running the FlyRig 5 this way so we suggest using a Current Doubler Adapter (the one with the Green end) connected to any two of Outputs 1-4 with the corresponding DIP switches set away from Normal in order to guarantee reliable operation.

A follow up to this question. The Fly Rig RK5 power supply is rated at 12v DC, 150mA, and the pedal draws approx 100mA per Tech 21's specs. Should this be powered with a current doubler on 1 - 4 (60mA each) with dip switches away? Also, is it okay to use the output splitter adapter in place of the current doubler adapter considering it has a ground lift?

Thanks,
Greg

No current doubler is necessary. We talked directly with a tech at Tech 21 about this and confirmed that this is an acceptable way to power the Fly Rig 5.

The Output Splitter will not function as a Current Doubler.

Good Luck!

I'm having a problem powering the Fly Rig RK5 as suggested in this post.

When using outputs 1-4 on the PP2+ with the corresponding switch ON, the RK5 functions, but presents a low hum (like 60 cycle) through the amp. Just enough hum that it's unusable.

When I swap to the Tech 21 power supply, using all the same interconnects, the hum disappears.

I swapped out power supply cables and tried different outlets on the PP2+ (still 1-4) with no change. Both the PP2+ and the Tech 21 power supply are plugged in to the same outlet.

Ideas?

Thanks

Interesting indeed!

By all accounts it "shouldn't" need the Current Doubler Adapter (the one with the Green end), I wonder if the other two users above were ever successful running it this way.

Just because I cannot see what you have going on in person... are you certain that what you have is in fact the Pedal Power 2+ and not the Pedal Power 2 or original Pedal Power?

It wouldn't hurt to run the Current Doubler... Interested in testing this out? Where in the world are you?

Hi John
Thanks for the prompt response. Yes I do have the PP2+. I don't currently have the green barreled cable needed to test the current doubling. If I did get one, would it require using both L6 labeled outputs? I'm currently using one of those 2 outputs (with the supplied red barrel cable) to power my L6 DL4. BTW I'm in Los Angeles.

You would use any two of outputs 1-4 with the corresponding DIP switches set away from Normal.

Since you followed my advice and had trouble... PM me your address and I'll get a cable to you right away.

Is this a known issue with Flyrig's at this point? Thinking of adding one to my touring board but that kind of noise in the signal chain will render it unusable in a live situation for me.

Not so much a "known issue" as it is "not fully tested" ;)

If you have a Pedal Power 2+, then it seems you should err to using the Current Doubler Adapter (the one with the Green end) connected to any two of outputs 1-4 with the corresponding DIP Switches set away from Normal.
If you have a Pedal Power ISO-5, Digital, 4x4, or Mondo you would simply use one of the High Current 12V Outputs with no adapter cable necessary.

I hope that helps!
