DINGBAT CABLING QUESTIONS

Post by coffeehead01 »

Hi, I'm an old duff who hasn't dealt much with pedal boards, but here I am with a snazzy Voodoo Lab medium board, and 9 pedals. I've got them on the board, and I've got the patch cables set. I have the Voodoo 4x4 power box, it's got a bunch of 9v inputs, and a pair of 9 / 12 inputs. I have the 18 inch "S", and straight cables going from the boxes to the power box, but what I don't know is how much do I need to be worrying about this "center negative" type language. I have a pulp n' peel compressor that says 9v "negative center", and I have Electro Harmonix Oceans 11 reverb that says "requires 150 mA at 9v with a 'center negative' plug" (Huh?). The 9v inputs on the power box say 100 mA, and my concern is the box won't be powered correctly with the 9v input. Can I plug it into the 12v that shows 400 mA ?

Any help with this is greatly appreciated. I couldn't thank someone enough really. For giggles, all my pedals: 1. Delay (MXR) 2. Chorus (MXR) 3. Reverb (Oceans 11) 4. Looper (TC Electronic) 5. Echo Shifter (Ibanez) 6. Beat Buddy 7. Echo Plex (TC) 8. Overdrive (Dirty Shirley) 9. Compression (pulp n peel v4).

First the good news... all your pedals are likely Center Negative. This is describing the polarity of the DC power jack and Center Negative is pretty much the standard in guitar pedals. All should use the standard all black barrel cables included with the 4x4.

Here are the pedals I can identify...
The Echo Shifter and the Pulp n' Peel can each be powered from any 9V output on the 4x4.

The Dirty Shirley accepts 9-18V so I would probably plug this one in using one of the 12V Outputs so you can power all nine pedals.

The Beat Buddy and the Oceans 11 each require higher current so they should be powered from any of the 9V 400mA Outputs.

These pedals I'm not exactly sure what you have...
"Delay (MXR)" - If this is the Carbon Copy then it can be powered from any 9V output on the 4x4.
"Chorus (MXR)" - If this is the Analog Chorus then it can be powered from any 9V output on the 4x4.
"Looper (TC Electronic)" - Exactly which model is this? If its the small box Ditto, or Ditto Stereo, or Ditto X2 then it can be powered from any 9V output on the 4x4. Some other models, like the Ditto X2 JAM or Ditto MIC require higher current and should be powered from a 9V 400mA Output.
"Echo Plex (TC)" - Umm... maybe you mean Dunlop ;) , if so then this should be powered from a 9V 400mA Output.

I hope that helps!
