I recently purchased an M9 and would love some advice as to how to make the Gnd Ctrl switch between different presets on the m9.
I've tried searching the forum and on youtube but haven't yet been able to find what I'm looking for.
I have some pedals that will be before the amps input and then I'd like to use the M9 in the effects loop of the amp and will place the M9 in one of the GCX loop positions destined for the amp's fx loop. I have the cabling down no problem.
Its the configuration of the M9 triggered by Gnd Ctrl that has me confused.
I plan on using the Gnd Ctrl switches as presets (not IA's). And use the Gnd Ctrl to activate the M9 GCX loop and change patches on the M9 depending on what I want associated with each Gnd Ctrl preset button.
Essentially, I'm looking for a step by step on how to program the M9 and the Gnd Ctrl.
Any of you m13 or m9 users have a "here's what buttons I push to make this button on the Gnd Ctrl switch this patch on the m9(or13) cheat sheet you'd care to share?
Many thanks in advance
Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
Re: Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
Out of the box the Ground Control Pro presets should be sending MIDI Program Change messages on MIDI channel 1 which should recall presets on the M9. Is there no response at all?
There are no step by step instruction for this specific setup but the Device Name/Channel section of the Ground Control Pro manual will explain how to get the Ground Control Pro configured for your MIDI devices. The assigning MIDI Program Changes section under Edit Preset will explain how to start programming your Ground Control Pro presets.
The Scene Select chart from the M9 Advanced Guide will show you what Scenes will be called up when sending specific MIDI Program Changes.

Re: Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
John, it's been awhile. I had to send my m9 back due to issues with a certain batch. But now I finally have my new m9 and just as important... some time to try and sit down with this thing and my CGP.
So far:
I can get my GCP to talk to the m9. I have it in 4 preset/bank mode. (I want to be able to use the IAs.)
I can even get it to change FX combinations among the 4 presets and hold the edits I have made...but only in those first 4 preset spots.
And from the GCP manual I understand how to go into the edit menu and change the program number for that particular preset.
I am just having a hard time translating the Scene Select table Program Change # columns into a number I would enter into the preset edit on the GCP.
if we take the first row on the table:
Scene 1A (fldr 1;3)
Program Change # [ 0 (Fldr 1); 12 (Fldr3)]
What the heck does that mean in program change number layman's terms? In other words, what would I enter in the CGP when I am assigning midi program changes?
I understand that I don't have a good grasp as to how the m9 organizes what I am used to calling "patches." (This box is creating virtual pedal boards and I'm used to rack units that have patch numbers.)
I am going to try and noodle through how to save my custom combinations to specific folders.
Can tell me how to make my CGP find those Memory locations as laid out in the attached table? Then maybe I can pull the two together.
Right now I have an ice cream headache from all this and I'm not eating ice cream.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Re: Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
It looks to me like each patch, or scene, has four variations called Folders. Using your example, if you wanted scene 1A, Folder 3, you would send Program Change 12. If you wanted scene 1A, Folder 2, you would send Program Change 06.
It is possible that confusing things further is that the Ground Control Pro defaults the devices within the Device Name/Channel list as Starts at 01... unless you change this to Starts at 00 for the device location assigned to control the M9, the Program Change numbers will all be offset by one digit.
Let us know what you find.

Re: Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
I agree...this is unnecessarily confusing. I'll explain it all for you.
The M9 has 24 Scenes (Presets).
For the way the physical pedal works and how you access them from the user interface these scenes are organized into 4 "folders". Within the folder each of the 6 footswitches represents a scene. So you have 6 scenes within each folder.
6 scenes x 4 folders = 24 scenes
From your MIDI control perspective you'll be using MIDI Program Changes (PC) 0-23 to access the 24 scenes.
Folder 1 has scenes 0-5
Folder 2 has scenes 6-11
Folder 3 has scenes 12-17
Folder 4 has scenes 18-23
Those scene numbers correspond to the PC you should send from the GCP. I would dedicate a MIDI channel specifically to the M9 that is different than any of your other MIDI controllable gear.

Re: Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
Thanks Stilwel and John,
I will see if I can get this thing configured in a sensible way now. I truly appreciate you both taking the time to help explain that chart to me

Re: Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
Did you ever get it to work correctly? I believe this is the exact situation I'm going to have. Some effects before the amp and the m9 in the loop for my delays/reverb. Just want to make sure that it can control the m9.
Re: Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
well my "just use this hammer" approach is as follows: when I am creating a preset that requires the m9 to be in the signal path, i hit the edit button on the GC scroll to program change section and then scroll through the program change numbers until i see the display on the m9 change. then i edit that particular effect/s until it is what i am looking for and because the m9 auto saves i'm done.carlito17 wrote:Did you ever get it to work correctly? then i double check by switching to a different bank, punching through some presets that also use the m9 verify those are unchanged and then come back to the new bank i was editing and and verify that the particular preset requiring the m9 still calls up the right effect. on occasion it doesn't and i might have to try a different program change number.
but to date i have sucessfully created 5 presets on my GC that call up the m9 with the correct effect/s.
NOTE i only use the m9 for fairly extreme effect settings and the m9 is only wired though the set of loops that are running in my amp's fx loop.. for my bread and butter effects i use analog pedals before the amp (drives, tone changers)and in the loop delays modulatino fxetc.
Re: Gnd Ctrl + GCX + Line 6 M9 (or m13) Question
That's good to know. I run a Bogner XTC. I use regular pedals (chorus/flange/phase) before the amp and will be using the m9 for delay, reverb, whammy, plus any other crazy noises. I believe I'll be running the Ground Control with an RJM RG16 switcher so I can control amp channel changes and fx changes. 99% sure the GCX won't control the midi on the m9 and do the amp changes. I could be wrong.
